The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla, addressing ANC Veterans League National League Executive Committee members about progress regarding the military veterans benefits on 09 March 2012 in Johannesburg.
The Deputy Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Mr Thabang Makwetla,  met with the representatives from the ANC Veterans League in Johannesburg on 09 March 2012 to provide feedback on the progress made in terms of his mandate concerning the Military Veterans.

The meeting followed concerns raised by a community of military veterans with regard to the welfare of the military Veterans since the establishment of the Department of Military Veterans in 2009.

Addressing the delegates representing all nine provinces, Mr Makwetla assured the veterans that the bill had already been signed already into law by the State President Mr Jacob Zuma at the end of last year, it would enable his department to start rolling out military veterans benefits at the start of the next financial year.

Mr Makwetla revealed to the former freedom fighters that the department had made progress with regard to those whose health demanded regular attention in that they could visit their nearest military hospitals and sickbays  to receive medical assistance. He further added that they could also receive counselling as they lives had been disrupted at the time of the struggle for the democracy.

He also divulged that the department would also assist families with funerals in the case of destitute members, and so be responsible for the preservation and honour of military veterans (e.g. erection of common tombstones on the graves of all military veterans in different countries) and would also help the families wanting to visit those graves, and assist the veterans with education and training to acquire skills to fend for themselves and provide entrepreneurial training for those interested in taking up business careers.
