The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) received a request from Cape Town Provincial Disaster Management to assist with firefighting in the Camps Bay area on the slopes of Table Mountain in the Western Cape on Wednesday, 11 October 2017.
Two (2) South African Air Force (SAAF) Oryx Helicopters were dispatched to the Camps Bay Area to commence with aerial combating of run-away fires in the Bakoven area above the 12 Apostles Hotel. An initial assessment determined that no lives were threatened by the fires. The two (2) helicopters were utilised to limit or to minimise possible fire damage(s) to properties in the affected areas.
The two (2) SAAF Oryx helicopters each flew 2.3 hours overall and managed to deliver a total of 42 Bambi Buckets with each carrying 2 500 litres of water. The helicopters managed to contain the fires and only one (1) Oryx has been placed on standby in the Camps Bay area to assist ground firefighting teams to extinguish any possible fire flare-ups at the various identified spots. The second helicopter has since returned to Air Force Base Ysterplaat.
