DOD Transformation and Gender Conference

During August, Women’s Month various initiatives and campaigns by government departments seek with sharpened focus to increase awareness about issues affecting women.
20 August 2014 marked the official opening of the three-day DOD Gender Conference convened by the Chief Directorate Transformation Management, which lasted until 22 August 2014 at AFB Swartkop.
The purpose of the conference is to empower both genders in order to enhance transformation processes and an understanding environment in order to embrace change.
This year’s theme is: “Inspired, empowered to enhance and advocate change in the DOD”. The conference was attended by Dr Sam Gulube, the Secretary for Defence, Prof Edna van Harte, the Defence Force Service Commissioner, Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa, former Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Service and Divisional Chiefs and distinguished members of the DOD.
In his opening remarks, the Secretary for Defence, Mr Gulube, said that as one of the state entities, the Department of Defence has a duty to empower both genders for the purpose of enhancing transformation processes. He said that to accomplish this, there is a need for everyone involved in gender transformation to understand the environment in order to embrace it.
