SANDF handed over the Dakota C47 crash victim’s mortal remains

On Wednesday 5 December 2012, the nation learnt with great shock and sadness of the sudden loss of members of the SA Air Force who passed on when their C-47 Dakota aircraft they were travelling on crashed in the area of Giants Castle within Drakenberg mountain range en route to Mthata Airport. On board was the aircraft was a crew of six and five passengers.

The SA Air Force held the customary Military Mortal Remains Ceremony on 19 December 2012 at AFB Waterkloof to receive the mortal remains of SAAF members who died in the Dakota C-47 accident, the remains were handed over to their next of kin for preparations of burial. Lt gen Fabian Msimang, Chief of SA Air Force and senior members of the SAAF paid their last respects during the ceremony.

The SANDF afforded the families of the crash victims the opportunity to visited the crash site to enable famili members to see for themselves where their loved ones had died.
