As people around the globe answered to the call to serve or make a difference in one’s life as United Nations Secretary General has declared this idea internationally as the Mandela Day. On this day people are urged to give 67 minutes of their time doing good deeds to those who are less fortunate.

On 19 July 2012 corporals of the DOD HQ Unit traded their office for a day well spent with the kids from the SOS children’s village in Mamelodi. SA Soldier spoke to Amn Tebello Mahlatsi who is the chairperson of the forum and this is what he said, “this is project very close to my heart as it is a initiative that builds our communities. Giving our time as forum and lower ranks of the SANDF show cases our commitment of social responsibility in our communities,” affirmed Amn Mahatsi.

This forum donated groceries, painted and cleaned the garden. Cpl Sello Leshoene praised the forum saying, “I am proud of what we have done here, all this that we did was done out of our own pocket. We each contributed an amount that went into the buying of the groceries. It is my wish that people should learn that we might not please everyone but make a difference in one person’s life and that alone will make the greater difference.”

In closing Amn Mahlatsi thanked his Officer Commanding Col Chris Nqcama for the support and believing in the forum. Urged his team to continue with the good work.
