Following a number of media reports regarding a shooting incident that took place on Saturday 4 July 2020 near Acornhoek, Mpumalanga, the SANDF wishes to confirm that a civilian was shot during a confrontation with police and soldiers at Dingledale Trust, Chochocho Village.
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) had accompanied the South African Police Service (SAPS) to disperse members of the community who were meting out mob justice to a suspect in the area. In an attempt to disperse community members and calm the situation, the SAPS and SANDF was attacked by community members resulting in one member of the SANDF being stabbed with a screwdriver.
Another person from the community who alighted from car carrying a firearm was subsequently shot during the incident. The SAPS is investigating the incident.
