STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF DEFENCE: MEDIA
ALERT: SA HOSTS RSA/MOZAMBIQUE JOINT PERMANENT
COMMISSION ON DEFENCE AND SECURITY (JPCDS)

In light of the forthcoming 2009 FIFA
Confederation Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup
Soccer Tournament, security issues affecting
South Africa and Mozambique will be high on the
agenda during the inaugural meeting of South
Africa/Mozambique Permanent Joint Commission on
Defence and Security. These include border crime
such as human trafficking, gun running and drug
trafficking.
Matters pertaining to a joint naval and air
patrol within South African and Mozambican
territorial waters, will also be discussed. This
is due to international sea vessels rerouting to
use the two countries’ waters in the light of
the high rate of piracy activities in the horn
of Africa.
The Minister of Defence, Mr Charles Nqakula
will tomorrow (Friday 28 November 2008) lead a
South African delegation to the Ministerial
Session of the inaugural RSA/ Mozambique Joint
Permanent Commission on Defence and Security (JPCDS).
The South African delegation of ministers will
include, the Minister for Intelligence,
Honourable Dr. Siyabonga Cwele, the Minister of
Home Affairs, Honourable Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula,
the deputy Minister of Correctional Services,
Honourable Deputy Minister Lorretta Jacobus.
